This is a little gem, which will enhance your photography quite delightfully. It is very cleverly designed, very neatly made, perfectly simple to use, convenient to carry, highly effective and a wonderful bargain. Prior experience of macro photography is probably useful, but as it solves one of the most awkward aspects of macro, the lighting, so simply it is certain that an absolute beginner with imagination and patience will quickly produce satisfying work. I can barely keep my hands off mine...Olympus designed it and offer it as an accessory for their Pen range of Compact System Cameras, but it also works perfectly on the Olympus XZ-1. As far as I know it does not work on cameras which do not use the hot-shoe and accessory port of the Olympus Pen and XZ-1. It can be used outdoors to great effect; for example part of a back-lit leaf against a darkish background becomes a piece of natural jewellery.

Okay, it's not a ring light like we are all used to seeing. It's not supposed to be. It allows one to vary the angle and distance of the light source, allows for 2 power levels of light, with individual controls for each arm. One loses use of the adapter port, it's true, but I haven't had any problems using the LCD viewer. If this device doesn't suit your needs, buy a ring light, but personally I think this is much more flexible. This product seems like a good idea, however:It is very difficult to use this on a close-up subject and have any idea what the picture will be like with the screen - a viewfinder is needed and this light take up that spot.The arms are easy to move, in fact too easy. They will often not stay in position if they camera is moved forcing one to keep a hand free to adjust.At least the MAL Arm lights are not too expensive - but you get what you pay for.
